life of hardship by straight path.

By Javeria Aqeel

Sadness, grief, misery and sorrow are feelings which are a part and parcel of this life. When we look around us we see poverty and suffering, death and catastrophes and even in personal lives there is grief and sadness and setbacks and failures, loss of loved ones and heartache.

In short this life is full of problems and is not as perfect as we want it to be.  These problems, tests and trials of this world may lead someone to think that God is unkind. People usually say what kind of a God lets people die in a tsunami or why God did this to us when we dont like this and that.

However this is not the case at all. God is not unkind. This world is like an exam for each one of us. Just like we give exams in schools and colleges – we may find the exam hard and difficult but that does not mean that the examiner is unkind. The exam is just to test our skills and abilities to award us accordingly. We need to pass many exams to become successful in this world and to have a good career and a job.

Similarly, this entire life is a test- so we will have to work really hard just like we work hard to pass our school exams or to get any degree and we will have to be patient as Allah says in the Quran:

Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidingsto those who patiently persevere,” (Quran 2:155)

Even the wealth and possessions given to a person are a trial for him or her. If some one is rich that does not at all mean that Allah is happy with such a person and therefore has bestowed him with wealth.

And know that your possessions and your children are a test…” Quran 8:28

Also even our friends and family and people around us may be a test for us. Their injustice or hatered or their bad behaviour towards us may be a test for us as well to see if we are steadfast and patient.

Allah subhanawata says:

And we have appointed some of you a test for others. Will you be patient?” (Quran 25:20)

Similarly while giving the exam we are not awarded immediately for our correct answers and we are not punished for our wrong answers there and then. We need to wait for the exam to be over and for the papers to be checked and the result to be announced. In the same fashion, this life is an exam – but we dont know when the exam will get over. As soon as we die our exam would be over and we will have to wait for the result which will be announced on the day of Judgement.

Allah says: Every soul shall have a taste of death: and We test you by evil and by good by way of trial. To Us must ye return.”(Quran21:35)

When we are faced with difficulties, problems, sorrow and grief in this world we should realize that this is only a temporary passing phase where Allah is testing us to see if we still are thankful to Him and if we still obey Him.  This does not mean that Allah is unkind. We must remember that He is our examiner. If we do not like the questions in our college exam – does that mean we should give up and leave the paper and start hating the examiner? NO not at all.

We should persevere and be patient and continue asking for Allahs help and mercy and do our best to solve that difficult question.  Allah says that those who when faced with difficulties and problems lose heart and quit will be the worst losers in this world as well as the hereafter.

There are among men some who serve Allah, as it were, on the verge: if good befalls them, they are, therewith, well content; but if a trial comes to them, they turn on their faces: they lose both this world and the Hereafter: that is loss for all to see!”

(Quran 22:11)

  1. But i heave a question. For an exam in the schoole.. if you work hard, study and do ewerything in you’re power to learn the stuff.. You will pass because you heave worked hard.. but what if things in your life, you dont heave influence on keep getting worse. even how much that you pray, your prayers dont seem to be heard. while nut just 1 thing, but ewerything in ones life is getting worse.. how kan kan that be an exam..?

    • this can be a test from God/Allah because He needs to see if you will turn to him for help, and seek him for guidance. or will you turn away and complain and seek other means of comfort such as drugs or alcohol. It is a test to see if you will be patient. Remember, that God does not burden any soul with more than what it can bear. This whole life is a series of tests one after another so that we are able to make choices. Once a lady I knew about was trying to make birth control because she didnt want to have children. Then before the cycle of control was finished she found out that she was pregnant. She started to shout and curse Allah. After several months when she went to the doctor for a check up she found out she was having triplets. Everyone around her was shocked and told her it was because she cursed Allah that now he tested her with the very thing that she was afraid of. Allah has knowledge of all things and knows what is best for us even if we feel that it is hard on us or that we cannot possibly over come it. But it is this process and going through this test that will polish us up and make us shine and stronger so we should ask Allah for the patience to get us through any hardship.

  2. i didnt asked to be born in this world..i didnt asked to be ugly..i didnt asked for him to give life to me…why do all things happen to me have to be unfair??..why i’m here?..i’m here(in this world) because he(god) can tortured me everyday seeing all the unfair in my life?..

    • Salam,,
Can you tell me why you think you are ugly? Do you know,, I am not really ugly but I am not pretty either but i feel ugly– that is because humans put value on pretty or rich or fancy etc.. but Allah put value on your heart, your patience, your love, your goodness and kindness and charity and your worshiping of God almighty alone…. and no one else.
When you bow down in prayer you are beautiful to God, when you give in charity, your heart shines,,, when you recite the words of God, your voice is great and when you fast your breath is like that of musk to Allah!
Although I can understand your pain, there are others out there worse than you,, who have been burned badly and their faces deformed… people run in fear when they see them.. yet they are beautiful because God created them beautiful inside! We are hear and Allah gives us tests in this life so that we can learn and grow and gain blessings— and some people will gain their share of blessings in the next life- which is much better, than in this short and transient life we live– we are here only for a short time– so chin up and worship Allah as he asked us to and inshallah the blessings will come sooner or later.

Be good, kind, dress your best, be as clean as you know how to be, worship Allah as much as you can and you will be a beautiful person!!

  3. i have read your answer to said that he wants us human to turn to him and ask for guidence and help..i always do that(not without any effort)..just what i’m trying to say is,we are his chess..this world and this life is “god’s game of life”..

    • Sometimes yes we may feel or think this.. but it is because we do not understand his reasons for the tests he places upon us. It is so that on the day of judgement we know we had times when we could make choices,, even if that choice is being patient in the face of hardship, onliness, poverty, illness etc. We cannot always comprehend what God planned for our lives.. but we should know that He does what is best for us in the long run.

  4. I have had many debates with my peers about the ‘test’ of this life Allah put’s us through. Some of my friends asked me, if it is indeed a test, shouldn’t it be a fair one? For example, to my knowledge, i know that if a child dies b4 the age of 7, they will go directly to heaven.. right?! ok, now compare it with a 50 year old, or even a 20 year old, we go thru so many trials in life, tested all the time, but there is still a chance, no matter how much of good we do, that we might have unintentionally sinned some how and may end up in hell or be judged harshly, But this 7 year old who has died, has never gone thru the trials of life, but goes directly to heaven without even doing anything. how is that fair on that 50 or 20 year old?

    • The reason is only with Allah but we may assume that because the child is still young below the age of reason and is considered innocent and pure while we old folks should have the reasoning ability to choose between right and wrong. And dont forget how often it is written in the Quran about the mercy and forgiveness of Allah if only we would repent and turn to him.
